  • 1959 - Florida’s first open heart surgery on an 8-year-old patient.
1960
  • 1960 - Florida’s first Neonatal Care Unit is established.
  • 1962 - The Birth Defects Treatment Center for Children was established at Shands at the University of Florida with a grant from the National March of Dimes Foundation.
  • 1966 - Maternal and Infant Care Program at Shands at the University of Florida was established to serve North Central Florida.
  • 1966 - UF physicians at Shands at UF perform state's first successful adult and pediatric kidney transplants.
  • 1967 - Florida’s first pediatric intensive care unit is established at Shands at the University of Florida.
1970
  • 1976 - Florida’s first Regional Pediatric Pulmonary Center opens.
  • 1976 - Shands at the University of Florida open’s U.S. ’s first computerized cardiac catheterization lab equipped to treat adults and children.
1980
  • 1983 - Florida’s first pediatric bone marrow transplant for cancer is performed by UF physicians at Shands Children's Hospital at UF.
  • 1985 – Shands at UF joins Children’s Miracle Network, an international alliance of premier hospitals for children.
  • 1988 - 2006 Shands Children’s Hospital launch the First “Red Alert” Asthma Program in the United States .
  • 1986 - UF physicians at Shands Children's Hospital at UF perform Florida's first pediatric heart transplant.
1990
  • 1990 - Shands Children's Hospital, the Southeast’s first pediatric neuro-oncology center, opens.
  • 1991 - UF physicians at Shands Children's Hospital at UF perform Florida's first pediatric kidney-liver transplant.
  • 1991 - UF physicians at Shands at the University of Florida perform Florida’s first pediatric segmental liver transplant.
  • 1993 - UF physicians at Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida perform Florida’s first neonatal heart transplant.
  • 1994 – Shands Children’s Hospital was the first to perform a pediatric heart-kidney transplant in the state of Florida.
  • 1995 - UF physicians at Shands Children's Hospital at UF perform Florida's first neonatal heart transplant.
  • 1995 - UF physicians perform the Southeast's first pediatric placenta/umbilical cord blood transplant for Leukemia.
  • 1995 – Shands at the University of Florida was the first hospital with an In Vitro Fertilization program in the southeast to have a baby born after pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
  • 1996 - Shands Children’s Hospital receives its designation as a children’s hospital.
  • 1996 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do a pediatric lung transplant.
  • 1996 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first on Florida to do Gene Therapy for Cystic Fibrosis.
  • 1997 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do a Pediatric Heart-Lung Transplant.
  • 1997 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do a Pediatric Pancreas-Liver Transplant.
  • 1997 – Shands at the University of Florida was the first in the region to perform a Rotational arthroplasty for bone cancer.
  • 1997 - UF physicians at Shands at UF perform the United States ’ first embryonic tissue transplant for spinal cord repair.
  • 1998 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do a Pediatric Double Lung Transplant.
  • 1999 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do Interventional Cardiology in small infants.
2000
  • 2000 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do a Cord-Blood Transplant for Sickle Cell Anemia.
  • 2002 - The Ronald McDonald House opens in the pediatric family hospitality suite near PICU at Shands at the University of Florida.
  • 2002 - The Shirley A. Graves, M.D. and James L. Talbert, M.D. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit opens in new location - all individual, private rooms – at Shands at the University of Florida.
  • 2002 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do the youngest Double Lung Transplant.
  • 2003 - Shands Children's Hospital was the first in Florida to do a Recombinant Protein Replacement for Pompe's Disease.
  • 2004 - UF physicians at Shands at the University of Florida perform Florida's first procedure to remove pediatric hypothalamic hamartoma.
  • 2004 - Shands Children’s Hospital is one of 10 children’s hospitals in the nation to partner with March of Dimes to establish the NICU Family Support Program.
  • 2004 - Pediatric Hospitalist Service Program is established at the Shands Children's Hospital.
  • 2005 - The Donald V. Eitzman, M.D. Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Level 3 expands at Shands Children’s Hospital through a grant provided by Children’s Miracle Network.
  • 2005 - Pediatric Catheterization Lab Opens at Shands Children's Hospital.
  • 2005 - Pediatric Dialysis celebrates 30 years of excellence at Shands Children’s Hospital.
  • 2006 – Shands at the University of Florida is the first in the region to perform a Titanium rib surgery to treat pediatric patient with Scoliosis.
  • 2006 - First patient in Florida to receive the Berlin Heart - mechanical heart device sized for children, at Shands at the University of Florida.
