Shands Children's Hospital is a hospital- within-a-hospital dedicated to pediatric services. Shands Children's Hospital currently offers all the clinical services delivered at any children's health center in the nation, from basic primary care to highly specialized procedures such as transplantation. Operational since 1958, Shands admits nearly 9,300 pediatric patients annually. In addition, more than 1171,000 children are followed as outpatients each year. Shands Children's Hospital has many statewide affiliations, including associations with more than 195 outreach clinics stretching from the Georgia border to Miami.
The Shands Burn Center is one of only four burn centers in the state of Florida and one of the two Florida centers that treat children with second and third degree burns.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Shands was the first of its kind in the Southeast and has been at the forefront of bone marrow and cord blood transplantation.
At the Shands Cardiovascular Center at the University of Florida, the latest advances in diagnosis and treatment of heart disease are available, including cardiac catheterization, angiography, and balloon angioplasty. It is one of only seven referral centers in Florida for children who require complicated cardiovascular surgery.

University of Florida offers one of the most comprehensive Pediatric Services and Outreach Programs in the state, including an 24-bed pediatric intensive care unit and one of seven Pediatric Pulmonary Training Centers in the nation.
The Shands Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides special care to severely ill infants from throughout Florida and south Georgia
When emergencies arise in outlying areas, the ShandsCair Helicopter is dispatched at the request of referring physicians for the rapid transport of their patients to Shands.
As Florida's leading referral center for organ transplantation, Shands sets the pace in procurement and transplantation of organs of all types. Our programs include heart, liver, kidney, bone marrow, lung, cornea, and bone transplant.
Shands houses several regional medical centers for pediatric patients, including the Genetics and Diabetes Units, the Regional Pediatric Pulmonary Center, the Spina Bifida Center, and a Regional Perinatal Center.
