The
success of the Children's Miracle Network and the generosity
of its supporters have made it possible for Shands Children's Hospital to enrich its pediatric
programs with research, state-of-the-art medical equipment,
special care equipment and a wide range of services that
might not otherwise have been possible. Since 1985, the
Children's Miracle Network has raised over $23 million for
Shands Children's Hospital through fund raising efforts
that take place all-year-long. One hundred percent of the
net proceeds of these funds have gone directly to benefit
the children treated by the University of Florida physicians
at Shands Children's Hospital. Here are just a few of the
programs that have been supported or enhanced by these funds:
The fetal echocardiography program at Shands Children's
Hospital offers patients the opportunity to more quickly
and accurately assess the condition of a variety of congenital
heart defects while still in the mother's womb. This advanced
technological equipment enables the healthcare team to
best determine options for care and treatment of serious
congenital heart defects.
The extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program
provides advanced care for infants with cardiac disease
or reversible respiratory failure. Funding to start this
program was granted through the Children's Miracle Network.
Children's Miracle Network dollars have also paid for
renovations of rooms on the fourth floor to make the environment
more responsive to the needs of children who are away
from their homes and families with rooms that are more
like home.
Tours of operating and recovery rooms for children prior
to their surgery are designed to help ease their anxiety
by acquainting them with this unique environment.
Our neonatal ground ambulance provides transportation
for children throughout Florida to and from their community
hospitals.
Both research and patient care equipment have been funded
for Hematology/Oncology, Pathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Gastroenterology, Immunology, Transplantation, Pulmonary
Diseases, Genetics, Endocrinology and Neonatology.
Our Child Life program has been enhanced with educational
books, games, video systems and computers.
Rocking chairs, blood pressure monitors, infant warmers,
medical play dolls, dialysis machines, external pacemakers,
telemetry units and other patient care equipment had been
made available for units including Pediatric Intensive
Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, Adolescents, Children,
Cardiac Intensive Care and the Newborn Nursery.
A successful car seat program has been created for mothers
who are unable to afford car seats for their children.
Special credenza beds (20) on the pediatric floors allow
for more comfortable accommodations for patients and family
members during overnight stays.
A Family Resource Center fully equipped with a computer
with internet access and a printer. This allows family
members to research diseases and conditions through recommended
web sites. A limited library of recommended books and
publications is also available.
The Alachua County Safe Kids Coalition at Shands Children's
Hospital offers many important community outreach programs
to prevent unintentional childhood injury. Such programs
include education and awareness on fire safety, water
safety, car seat safety and bike safety, to name a few.
The Alachua County Safe Kids Coalition is part of the
National Safe Kids Campaign and brings together more than
50 organizations and individuals who are concerned about
childhood injury prevention. Founded in 1987, the coalition's
mission is to provide education, programming and awareness
about preventable injuries. The local chapter's efforts
are led by Shands Children's Hospital with funding provided in large part by Children's
Miracle Network. For more information, please call the
